Our Fuel Cell Power Module (FCPM) provides electrical power on Navantia’s S-80 Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) submarine for the Spanish Navy. It generates power from a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The fuel, bio-ethanol, is reformed into hydrogen rich gas and is combined with the oxidant, gaseous oxygen from liquid oxygen.
The AIP PEM fuel cell has demonstrated thousands of hours of operation. The cell design meets stringent leakage requirements and includes a novel approach to water management minimizing the balance of plant components that results in a simple power solution. The S-80 FCPM is qualified and in production.
