Trimmable horizontal stabilizer actuators (THSA) are advanced products for large military and commercial aircraft applications that move tail surface to trim the aircraft The actuator must have a very high structural integrity to move a large surface in response to trim signals from the pilot or autopilot. Severe working environment, workloads and criticality of THSA function makes the system’s engineering and manufacturing very complex.
Propeller Systems has met the challenge and developed the largest THSA system for a commercial aircraft platform. The THSA uses three power channels – two hydraulic motors and one electric motor. Advances in motor technology make it possible to use electromechanical stabilizer actuators for larger aircraft.
The key benefits of the THSA system include enhanced safety thanks to a dual load path architecture, and easier aircraft control and stability reducing pilot workload.
