Torpedo propulsion – Spearfish Engine

The Spearfish Engine is the power plant for the United Kingdom’s 21 inch diameter, heavy weight Spearfish torpedo. The core of the power plant is a gas turbine engine that is fueled by a liquid monopropellant, ‘Otto Fuel’, and HAP (hydroxyl ammonium perchlorate ) oxidant.

In addition to providing propulsive power, it drives an alternator for the torpedo’s electrical power and its hydraulic pump supplies hydraulic power to the tail-mounted control surfaces.

Operational today and based on its reliability and performance to date is planned to be the UK’s torpedo power plant for the foreseeable future.
