Kidde Aerospace Awarded Contract for Humvee Fire Detection & Suppression System
“Kidde has been awarded contracts for delivery of a total of 12,594 Automatic Fire Extinguishing System (AFES) Kits worth over $60 million to be retrofitted on US Army M1114 High-Mobility Multi- Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HUMMWV or “Humvees”) deployed in Iraq. These systems provide embarked US soldiers with enhanced survivability protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other combat fire threats. Delivery of these AFES Kits has already commenced and will continue through 2007. The contracts include potential options for an additional 7,945 AFES Kits that could be worth over $38 million for delivery in 2007 and 2008.
The principal components of the AFES retrofit kit are fire sensors and extinguishers that automatically detect and then suppress explosive fires caused by enemy threats in milliseconds. These products are manufactured at Kidde Dual Spectrum, Goleta, CA and Kidde Aerospace, Wilson, NC.
AFES systems, similar to the ones offered for the M1114 Humvee, have been installed in US Army M-1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, M-2/3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Stryker Light Armored Vehicles, all deployed in Iraq. These systems have been credited with saving the lives of our soldiers."
