Research & Development

Kidde has significant research and development capabilities, which seek to retain the competitive edge of the company by providing a fundamental understanding of the relevant sciences and technologies used in fire protection.

There is a dedicated research department which has the following mission:
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and new product concepts for Kidde Aerospace & Defense companies (including Kidde Graviner).
  • Provide scientific and technical support and information.
  • Act as a technology clearing house.
The Scientists and Engineers in the research department have expertise in fire suppression testing, detector development and evaluation, modelling, electronic design and optics. The department features a suite of analytical instrumentation including electron microscopy with X-Ray microanalysis (SEM/EDX), gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and size analysers for powders and sprays.

There is also an outdoor fire testing range where a number of bespoke simulators are used to evaluate the performance of prototype systems against a range of aviation and military vehicle fire threats.

Research Activities

In addition to carrying out research projects, the department provides technical support to Kidde manufacturing operations in the United States and Europe.
